“Less grace, Captain. You’re dead. You’re a dead dancing person.”
Earth Night aboard the Emberkind. Charlie has just tried to explain the concept of a music video to a room full of beings who cannot fathom why humans would film themselves dancing to songs that already exist. Tavi, who has never once left a stable conversation alone, asks for a demonstration. And then he asks the Captain to try it.
What follows is a dance lesson for about ninety seconds, and then it is very much not a dance lesson.
This is that moment. Charlie’s hand on Reyna’s hip, the count lost, the room gone, and Reyna already looking back at her. If you have read Every Almost, you know exactly which beat this is. If you haven’t, all you need to know is that neither of them is going to talk about it.
Illustrated by Alex Segura, who took a scene that lived in my head for two years and handed it back better than I imagined it.
Want it signed? Signed prints are available in person only. I bring prints to every event I vend at, and I will happily sign one for you at the table. Check my events page for where I’ll be next.
