Charlie Wickett fixes things for a living. She's got the job she's wanted since she was nine years old, her sister sharing her apartment, and a life in California she built herself, out of nothing, on purpose. It's a good life.
Then she touches a piece of space debris at JPL that technically shouldn't exist, and wakes up forty light-years from home on an alien animal rescue vessel, looking up at a captain who somehow makes everything a little less terrifying.
Now Charlie has six months aboard the Emberkind as it carries her home. Six months of impossible rescues, alien corridors, and the best engineering problems she's ever been handed. Six months to learn the people who run this ship, who are strange and loud and kind and, somehow, her kind of people.
The Captain is a different problem entirely.
But Charlie will return to Earth… just so long as nobody does anything drastic.
Like find a reason to stay.

Adult sapphic sci-fi romance. Slow burn, found family, an 80s mixtape running under the whole thing, and a happy ending I promise not to take away.
Book One of the Emberkind Series.
About the signed editions
Signed copies are hand-signed by me at my kitchen table and personalized if you'd like. Just tell me who it's for when you add it to your cart, and anything else you'd like me to write. I read every one of these.
The physical book
Paperback: 5.5" x 8.5", 744 pages
Hardcover: 6” x 9” Digital Cloth™ Cover with Dust Jacket, 684 pages
Published by Ember Poppy Publishing, July 28, 2026
It's a big book. People keep telling me that length is the point, and I'm inclined to agree.
Content notes
Adult, with queer main characters and on-page romance. There's grief in it, in a few different forms. If you'd like detailed content notes before you buy, email info@emberpoppy.com and I'll send them, no explanation needed.
Shipping
For US Media Mail, please allow 2 to 10 days, depending on location. East Coast shipments usually take the longest.
International readers: Please allow up to 28 days for products to get to you! Between customs and tariffs and all the craziness of getting products in and out of the USA right now, it’s a lot of fun (detect the sarcasm?). You WILL receive tracking information and can follow along the arduous journey of your product, but fair warning: these shipments are sometimes slower than the sloth burn of Every Almost!
