"I should—"
"Yeah," Charlie said quickly.
A coolant cascade has just flooded the auxiliary bay aboard the Emberkind. The crew has been sent off to their jobs. The water is still glowing around everyone's boots, and Charlie Wickett, coming down a wet ladder too fast, has just been caught on the way down by her captain.
What's left is a shaft thirty inches wide, two women soaked to the skin, and three inches between them that neither of them is closing on purpose.
This is the moment before Maren walks in.
Readers of Every Almost know this one by its chapter. It is the closest the two of them come for a very long time, and nothing happens in it, which is the entire point of the book.
Illustrated by Alex Segura, who gave me the one thing I had no idea how to ask for, which is the look on both of their faces at the same time.
Printed on demand and shipped directly to you.
Want it signed? Signed prints are available in person only. I bring prints to every event I vend at, and I will happily sign one for you at the table. Check my events page for where I'll be next.
